Phillip Makhumula
Phillip is a Senior Technical Advisor working with the global USAID AFFORD program based in Nairobi, Kenya. He has more than 20 years experience working as a Food Fortification Specialist in many countries of Africa and Asia. He provides technical assistance to national programs in the areas of industry needs for adoption of food fortification, standards development and capacity building for regulators and nutrition laboratory personnel. He has initiated fortification programs in many countries for common staple foods such as oil, wheat and maize flour, salt, sugar and rice. He provides hands-on training for both regulators and producers in monitoring fortified foods at production and on the market. To this end, he has co-authored several manuals for internal and external monitoring of various fortified foods, import monitoring and commercial monitoring. As a trained chemist, he has provided laboratory training for testing of micronutrients in fortified foods and developed laboratory testing manuals for fortified foods which are widely used in Africa and South America. His consulting career over the years has seen him provide technical support to many countries across Africa sanctioned by global nutrition organizations such as USAID, GAIN, FAO, WFP, UNICEF, NI, FFI and HKI
